A doctor, politician, and philanthropist, Dr. Prashant Katakol straddles several worlds of experience. Apart from setting up and successfully running a 50 bed Hospital for Neurosurgery in Vijayapura, he is also actively involved in various social activities for the upliftment of people in the area. He has conducted many Neurosurgical operations free and also helped to mobilise funds for poor patients. He is a great admirer of our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and has initiated various activities under “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” to keep his city clean. He has also helped many auto drivers, barbers and others from the deprived community, to open “Jan Dhan Account”. He has helped the banks during demonetization.
Born in Huballi on the 8th of November, 1970 into the prominent family of Katakols, who were freedom fighters, Dr. Prashant Katakol has carried his family tradition of dedicating his life to the causes of the nation. His father Dr. Balappa S Katakol is a retired professor and mother Smt. Shakuntala B Katakol is a homemaker. He had his early education from prestigious schools in Bengaluru and completed his medical graduation from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belgavi. He completed his post graduation in Neurosurgery from the esteemed institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bengaluru.
Rural internship during the final year of graduation at the district hospital in Vijayapura impacted him greatly. After finishing his mandatory years of education, his window of opportunities was wide open. Professional placements in the West or in the corporate hospitals of Bengaluru with big packages did not allure him from his ideology. His call came in serving the people of Vijayapura, where extreme poverty, lack of basic amenities, very poor medical infrastructure and absence of speciality medical care lead him to his destination. He set up his practice and hospital at Vijayapura after a short 2 year stint at KLE Medical College Hospital in Belgavi as consultant Neurosurgeon.
He stood up to the challenges of setting up of his Neurosurgical practice in a place where there was a lacuna in basic medical infrastructure. But the positive side is that he helped in increasing the skill development of people in the area thus providing employment locally. He has built a strong reputation as a surgeon in Vijayapura today and has served as the President of Indian Medical Association, Vijayapura. He has also served as the Executive Committee Member of the Karnataka Neurosciences Academy.
To further improve the medical infrastructure of Vijayapura he has partnered with Yashodhara Super Speciality Hospital Pvt Ltd from Solapur to bring in multi-speciality medical care to the citizens of Vijayapura.
Owing to his long cherished dream of serving the people, he has, in addition to his active medical profession, plunged into active politics. He has joined the BJP to serve the people and live his belief “To build a Nation, it takes participants and not mere spectators”
