I was born on 8th November 1970 to Dr. Balappa S Katakol and Smt. Shakuntala B Katakol. My father is a retired Professor , an Engineering Graduate with doctorate from IIT Kharagpur and mother an adorable house wife. I was lucky to be educated at Sardarvallabhai Patel school at Rajajinagar Bangalore (VVSSPHS) till matriculation and moved on to Mysore Education society college (MES college) for my Pre university education. With keen interest in becoming a doctor, I pursued my Medical graduation at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical college Belagavi Karnataka and graduated in Neurosurgery from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences Bangalore a premiere National Institute at Bengaluru, in the year 1999.
Life had opened a wide array of possibilities for me ranging from seeking professional placements in the west to staying back at Bengaluru, working for the corporate Hospitals. I had to create a path that would not only satisfy me as a medical professional but also be meaningful to the society.
I chose Vijaypura city, a city whose district Hospital was our destination for three months rural Health (Internship) service during Graduation in 1993. Extreme poverty, lack of basic amenities, very poor infrastructure, absence of any specialty medical care had forced me to think as to what my life’s blueprint must contain, and I landed up in Vijaypura after a short stint of two years as consultant Neurosurgeon at KLE’s Medical college Hospital, Belgavi, Karnataka.
Building Neurosurgical practice in a place where there was no super specialty medical care available was indeed a challenge. From physical infrastructure, setting up of specialized man power, creating an atmosphere of confidence for people to undergo Brain and Spine surgeries at Vijayapura, in a financially challenging environment was an uphill task.
Over a period of 7 years, I was able to build a 50 bed Hospital for Neurosurgery in 2008.
8 years of single specialty practice made me realize that further growth of Neurosurgical vertical needs a multi disciplinary approach, and Vijayapura was in need of a multi superspecialty Hospital. I partnered with Yashodhara super specialty Hospitals pvt Ltd Solapur, to develop one at my campus.
